Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > FAMILY > Behind the Scenes

This episode is the only installment up to now with no scenes on the bridge (including classic Trek).

The episode was highly controversial among the writing staff, and Michael Piller's suggestion of a third instalment to a proposed Borg trilogy was rejected. The episode brought in the lowest ratings for the show so far.

Original ideas for a science subplot included a child stoaway, disappearing crew members and paranoid nightmares.

The Picard residence in LaBarre was shot at a private residence in Encino. The vineyards were shot at a private dryland operation near Lancaster.

Thoedore Bikel and Georgia Brown (Sergey and Helena) are two huge stars of Yiddish theatre.

In a cut scene, holographic Jack Crusher says he's about to report to the Stargazer, and that Wesley R Crusher was named after his grandfather, Richard Wesley Crusher, who give Jack his first flying lesson.

A tip of the hat to movie Trek - one infamous Crusher was a horse thief on Nimbus III (Star Trek V The Final Frontier).

Jack wears the old style Lieutenant JG uniform, but his locker with his effects is labelled with a rank of Lt. Cmdr.

Rick Berman names Miles Edward O'Brien after a little boy he knew.
