Directorial debut of now regular Star Trek director David Livingston who was production manager on the pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" after coming over from ABC in 1987.
   
Livingston was a huge fan of "The Manchurian Candidate" upon which this episode was based. He tried desperately to get some one from the movie to appear in the episode, but was unsuccessful.
   
Geordi's shuttle, the Onizuka, appeared in "The Ensigns of Command" and is formerly seen as Shuttle 5, the El Baz, in "Time Squared".
   
First appearance of the Phaser Rifle. Rick Sternbach had made many designs but David Livingston had the ultimate choice.
   
First TNG look at the Romulan and Klingon transporter beams.
   
Although Krios may be a Klingon Colony struggling for independence, the name is reused in season five's "The Perfect Mate" as the colony at war with Valt Minor.
