This episode had to be rushed into production one episode early when "Relics" had to be pushed back due to James Doohan's shedule.

Jeri Taylor on writer Frank Abatemarco: "He was a seasoned veteran, but it wasn't a fair introduction for him. It remained for his later work for everybody to realize that perhaps this wasn't for him."

Rene Echevarria originally intended this episode to be a Q-themed outing where Q would split the crew into twins representing opposite halves.

Troi's quarters are given as on 9/0910.

The voice of Captain Talmadge was provided by Terrence Beasor who previously had uncredited vocal roles in "Skin of Evil", "The Ensigns of Command" and "Devil's Due".

It appears that Marina forgot to put in her black contact lenses... when Dr. Crusher resuscitates her, Troi's eyes flutter open and it is clear her eyes are blue.

During the Ten Forward scene when Deanna enters with a grey streak in her hair, Marina was forced to wax her face to get rid of some fuzz, unfortunately the wax burnt her and she was in agony for three days.
