Episode Behind the Scenes

Ron Moore says that the episode was meant to be a crossover with the Solok scene written word for word for DS9 resident Ferengi Quark, however it was soon realized that the episode would air before DS9's pilot, "Emissary".

Frank Abatemarco got Jellico's name from the British fleet commander of the Battle of Jutland.

A scene which was cut for time included Jellico telling Geordi he'd played rugby at the Academy with the chief engineer's former captain Zimbata from the U.S.S. Victory.

Ron Moore had always wanted to try Marina Sirtis in a full Starfleet uniform to give her a break from her other outfits.

Ronny Cox (Jellico) is famous for his roles in Apple's Way, Cop Rock, Deliverance and the Beverly Hills Cop films as well as villainous parts in Robocop and Total Recall.

The Cardassian phaser which debuted here was known by Rick Sternbach as a "copper colored banana".

Solok was originally named Selok, but writers had already used it in "Data's Day".

You can spot a Bajoran and a Mizarian ("Allegiance") in the bar scene.

The bar scene was actually shot on the Replimat set of DS9.
