Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > AQUIEL > Behind the Scenes

This episode was originally designed to be another Geordi romance story. Jeri Taylor recalls "We now portray the 24th Century as being full of single people. We lost the O'Briens and everybody else is footloose and fancy free. It seems to me that's not the only comment we should be making - that marriage and serious relationships do survive into the 24th Century. But how to tell a love story with a Sci-Fi spin on it?"

Keith Rocha was named by Ron Moore for one of his high school friends.

The main problem the writers had with this episode was the "whodunit" factor, at one point considering Aquiel herself for the role. Ron Moore recalls "At one point we finally said 'Why not the dog?'. He had always been in the script; we had meant to leave him with Geordi from that time on."

Jeri Taylor was very pleased with actress Renee Jones (Aquiel), but didn't feel she fell into the Star Trek genre - "Star Trek sometimes does to actors what it does to writers - people who are very effective in one kind of thing feel very exposed, so I don't think this was quite her cup of tea."

Relay Station 47 was a redress of the cryogenic capsule in "The Neutral Zone".

Brannon Braga and Ron Moore's preferred title for this episode was "Murder, My Pet!"

The original closing scene had Data in Geordi's quarters commenting in a matter of fact was that "Spot doesn't do that" when Geordi discovers the newly chewed boots and soiled carpets. Finally, when the dog comes over and drools on Data's boots, Data delivers the deadpan line "Geordi, I think I am a cat person!".

Jim Mees had an ongoing grudge against the cost of producing detailed interiors of wall consoles - "Ron Moore and I have had a long standing running joke. Every show he ever wrote they always ended up going into a panel and fixing something. And I said to him 'Ron, do you know we're not on a real ship here? Do you know that if they pull that metal thing off there isn't anything there? It costs money to do it, it takes time to design these things!' So they now call them the Mees panels, cause I've bitched and moaned so much!"
