Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > FACE OF THE ENEMY > Behind the Scenes

This episode was originally intended to be a Doctor Crusher story.

An earlier idea had Q depositing the whole crew on a Romulan Warbird, but it was discounted for its likeness to Quantum Leap.

Mike Piller had originally joked that one of the Romulans would reveal that Spock tried to get out of Romulus but didn't make it. Teleplay writer Naren Shankar comments "It was one of those craaaaazy moments! You can't kill somebody like that offscreen!"

Pamela Winslow (McKnight) made two prior appearances as her character in "Clues" and "In Theory".

Carolyn Seymour played another Romulan in "Contagion" as well as a third appearance in "First Contact".

Naren Shankar named the Romulan secret service Tal Shiar after the fatal Vulcan neck break "Tal Shaya" created by D C Fontana in classic Trek's "Journey to Babel".

Hairstylist Joy Zapata and actor Michael Dorn had both lobbied for Worf's ponytail for a long time, but Rick Berman didn't want it to become "trendy". Zapata comments "It used to remind me of a Klingon that had gone to the beauty salon; it looked like Donna Reed! Now we tie it back, he carries himself differently - he's a whole different person."

The two wigs Dorn used were each made from hair sold by Russian children and cost $5000 each.
