Episode Behind the Scenes

Alan Scarfe (Tokath) previously played a different Romulan in "Data's Day".

Two premises were brought together to form the Klingon prison camp theme. George Brozak pitched the idea about capture Klingons who were too proud to go home. This particular idea initially duplicated a story in the works for spinoff DS9 which was later shelved. The second story was pitched by Daryl F Mallett, Arthur Loy Holcomb and Barbara Wallace and concerned the news that Worf's father may still be alive.

The "B-Plot" of Data dreaming was initially thought up by Brannon Braga and Rene Echevarria while the pair were having a pizza. Fans were very disappointed that the idea was not taken through to the second part, and writers promised a follow story (see "Phantasms").

The Jaglom Shrek character was named from Independent Film Directory Henry Jaglom.

James Cromwell (Shrek, also Cochrane in Star Trek First Contact) broke his leg between the production of the two parts, and his character's involvement had to be reduced.

Shrek was initially to have been murdered by one of the captured Klingons who refused to hear the truth about his father.

Shrek's craft was the old alien shuttle live set and miniature seen in "Legacy", "Final Mission", "A Matter of Time", "Liaisons" and "Gambit, Part I".

Data's cat Spot changed from a Somal female to a mixed short hair male. Apparently, the reason for the blunder came as a result of the producers losing the original source of Spot ("Data's Day") until the day of filming. Two cats played spot here - Brandy as the passive and backup Abbott as the active. Abbott was eventually replaced by Bud and then Monster.
