The staff dubbed this story "Beverly as Quincy".

This story went through three rewrites in script form.

Ronald Moore on "Suspicions" - "It was just a never ending, never waking nightmare. Keep the murder mystery, lose the warp thing, move Worf out, keep the flashbacks, loose the film noir, insert Beverly - it was just arghh!"

Joe Menosky's original premise had the same murder mystery thread, but set up the possibility that Warp travel is ripping holes in the fabric of space. Both Naren Shankar and Michael Piller were interested in the idea, and agreed to take on the project. It was subsequently agreed to stick to the mystery story, but the environmental idea would be saved for next years "Force of Nature".

The story was originally to be Worf-centered, but the producers decided he had had enough episodes already this season, so Ron Moore suggested Crusher as the new focus

Jeri Taylor learnt at the last minute that this episode would be the only one for which Whoopi Goldberg would be available. This announcement led to another series of rush rewrites.

James Horan (Jo'Bril) came back to TNG in "Descent, Part II" as Lieutenant Barnaby. He went on to star in multiple Trek guises including Tosin in spinoff Voyager's "Fair Trade", Ikat'ika in DS9's "In Purgatory's Shadow" / "By Inferno's Light", and the mysterious humanoid figure in various Enterprise episodes.

Tricia O'Neil (Kurak) starred as Captain Rachel Garrett in season 3's "Yesterday's Enterprise".

This episode showed the first Trek shuttlecraft not named for a real nor fictional scientist / explorer - the Justman, paying homage to classic Trek producer Robert Justman.

David Stipes (SFX Supervisor) created the sun's corona using actual NASA footage.
