Due to the fact that Pierce had a Betazoid maternal grandmother, he left empathic traces within the Enterprise's warp nacelle control room that compelled others with empathic abilities to also commit suicide.

Starfleet believed Finn had been killed in a plasma explosion at Utopia Planitia on stardate 40987.2, about a year prior to the ship's launch.
