In writer L.D. Scott's initial premise, the creatures Data stakes his career on were simply talking wall terminals and household appliances.

The exocomps were originally called metacomps. The name had to be changed when it was discovered a company existed with that name.

Rick Sternbach designed the exocomps, but due to budget restrictions, only two were built. One was composited in postproduction later to make the three that appear on screen.

The exocomps motion was propelled by a puppeteer with control rods. The rods were later digitally edited out.

Dr. Farallon was named for the islands off San Francisco Bay.

The particle fountain is a new model touched up with cheap detail and lighting by computer.

After "The Outcast", the producers said they didn't want to see LeVar's beard back on screen, however Burton came to them with a request they couldn't refuse - he needed it for his wedding.
