At one point, this episode had been scheduled for production after "11001001". If this had indeed happened, the computer modifications of the Bynars would have served to explain the holodeck malfunctions in this episode.

Robert Justman scoured the Paramount Studio Music Archives and selected a nostalgic song, "You Came To Me From Out Of Nowhere" for composer Dennis McCarthy to arrange, using a female singer for this episode. Star Trek producers Gene Roddenberry, Rick Berman, Robert H. Justman and writer Tracy Tormé received a Peabody Award for this episode.

The Cyrus Redblock character was based on actor Syndey Greenstreet, and Leach was based on Peter Lorre - both from "The Maltese Falcon".

Rob Bowman was originally slated to direct this episode.

TV Guide slammed this episode as being a copy of the original series episode "A Piece of the Action".

The private eye character was originally named Dixon Steele, but a change was ordered when the TV studio producing "Remington Steele" complained.

The Jarada were originally slated to appear and the script even describes them as yellow and black "wasp-like" aliens, however budget constraints forced them to be cut.

Dixon's address is, according to Mike Okuda - Room 312, 350 Powell, Union Square, San Francisco, Calif., phone Prospect 4631.
