Nobody on the staff knew what the title meant, but they all loved it. Jeri Taylor prefers the definition of avatar as "a repository of knowledge", referring to Data.
   
The Melona IV colony opening scenes were shot at the Golden Oaks Ranch (aka the Disney Ranch) in the Santa Clarita Valley north of LA.
   
The Entity was entirely computer generated. 18 inch miniature trees were added into the foreground after the live filming.
   
The light beam was animated on computer later, but the "sand trap" was a four foot wide tarp spread along the ground with air shot up from under the mesh.
