Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > SECOND CHANCES > Behind the Scenes

This was LeVar Burton's directorial debut.

In order to make sure the transporter accident wasn't explained away with techno babble, both Rick Berman and Michael Piller were adamant that the event be established as a one in a trillion occurrence due to the Nervala IV atmosphere.

Rene Echevarria later stated that the "Medlock's tale" of a Riker twin almost got him booted from the office until he added the renewed romance hook.

Jeri Taylor and the staff originally wanted to kill off Commander Riker, replacing him with the career climbing, 'younger' Riker at the helm with Data as first officer, adding huge complications to Troi's life. Both Berman and Piller dismissed the idea straight away.

Dr Mae Jemison appeared at LeVar Burton's invitation and marked the first time any real life space traveller had appeared in front of the cameras for Star Trek.

Jeri Taylor recalls that 'Tecumseh' was among the middles names considered for Riker.

Scheduling issues prevented Jonathan Frakes from pre recording his own trombone tracks for the Ten Forward jazz quartet scene, but Wendy Neuss said he would likely do so in the future.

The collapsed bridge was built and filmed live in Stage 16's Planet Hell set with cavern depths added on the computer in post production.
