Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > GAMBIT, PART II > Behind the Scenes

Alexander Singer (Director, Part II) visited Peer Lauritson's set during Part I to get a feel for the show's tone.

NBA Star James Worthy (Korath) was a major Star Trek fan, and told his friend Robert O'Reilly (Gowron, "Reunion", "Redemption", "Rightful Heir") he'd always wanted to appear on the show. He met with Berman and Piller who coordinated with Jeri Taylor to write him a part.

Ron Moore on James Worthy's appearance - "They asked if James Worthy could be written in and I said 'Who?' - cause I'm not a big sports fan, and then 'Oh! He's a Laker!'. We were looking for little filler plot elements to do anyway."

Alexander Singer on James Worthy's appearance - "They're in show business, they don't freeze, and they take direction well."

Alan Sims on James Worthy's appearance - "To him, the pressure of basketball was nothing compared to what it's like here."

Naren Shankar (Writer) on 'Gambit, Part II' - "We went for people who very logically felt that Vulcan's problems were linked to contamination by illogical people, so in a logical sense you say 'Get rid of them'. I just thought it was a very logical way to arrive at racism being the answer to your problems. It was a different but very believable tone for the Vulcans."

Naren Shankar reused Draken IV from his previous "Face of the Enemy" to increase credibility.

Yadalla Prime was originally intended to be Yonada Prime after the classic Trek episode "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", but was renamed due to the presumed Romulan origins.

Ronald Moore named the Stone of Gol for the plateau of the Vulcan Masters where Spock studied in the first feature, Star Trek The Motion Picture.

The Psionic Resonator was a late-developed idea, and was scaled back from the original plans to have it able to kill millions at one stroke.

According to Prop Master Alan Sims, the original Vulcan God of Death was bald headed until Rick Berman ordered that hair be etched on to avoid any resemblance to Patrick Stewart!

FX Supervisor Ron B Moore's initial was changed to "D" in a rare end credits typo.

Alexander Singer on the sets used in TNG - "There's more invention in that show per dollar and per hour of labor than almost anything else I've ever seen. It is so extraordinary that the industry at large doesn't know that or appreciate that: Richard James is in a class with anyone in the world."

Koral's Toron-class shuttle is the alien shuttle seen in "Liaisons" re-dressed again.
