	Picard tells Pressman he chose Riker as first officer without having met him on the strength his actions with Captain DeSoto on Altair III (see "Encounter at Farpoint").
	Riker left the Academy thirteen years ago and spent seven months on the U.S.S. Pegasus where his heroism earned him a promotion to lieutenant on the U.S.S. Potemkin (see "Peak Performance" and "Second Chances"). He was first officer on the U.S.S. Hood when he turned down his first captaincy (see "The Arsenal of Freedom").
