Episode Behind the Scenes

Writer Eric Stilwell originally anticipated the episode would be a flop due to a rushed three day final draft scoring and tight schedules from Whoopi Goldberg and Denise Crosby.

Captain Rachel Garrett's last name was taken from a pizzeria in writer Trent Christopher Ganino's hometown of San Jose.

Ganino and Stillwell came up with another story after this episode's success which involved using the Guardian of Forever when Surak, the founder of Vulcan Logic was found murdered. Picard was to convince Sarek to travel back in time to take Surak's place. Michael Piller nixed the idea, calling it a gimmick.

Time constraints prevented a much bloodier ending which involved Data being electrocuted, Wesley's being decapitated and Riker being mutilated. At the end, only Riker's death was retained.

Michael Piller voluntarily took his name off the credits to conform with the Writers Guild's credit limit of four names.

Dr Selar can be heard being paged ("The Schizoid Man") as well as Lt. Barrett, an homage to Majel Barrett.

O'Neill (Garrett) later played the Klingon scientist in "Suspicions".

First appearance of the Ambassador class starship.

In a blooper, Geordi wears the alternate uniform cuffs in a normal time scene.
