This episode came from a
one-line memo from Gene Roddenberry which Robert Sabaroff
fleshed out into a 30 page draft. |
The story was originally
inspired by "Seven Days in May", and the conspirators were
not aliens, but members of a faction within Starfleet who
were rebelling against the Prime Directive. |

At the time,
there were outcries from the likes of "Variety" for the
goriness in the scenes of death, worm-eating and exploding
heads. |
Henry Darrow (Savar)
was the first speaking-Vuclan part on TNG, and the first
deliver to the legendary Neck-Pinch. |
Jonathan
Farwell, another original Trek Fan, starred alongside Yul
Brynner in "The King and I". |
The Andrew
Probert-designed Ambassador Class was mentioned here as
Keel's ship, but later appeared as the Enterprise-C in "Yesterday's
Enterprise". |
All of the FX
shots of Earth and the spacedock were from the Trek
movies. |
The glass
etched banquet room doors were later reused for Ten
Forward. |
The story left
ample room for a sequel, but was unfortunately never
picked up. |
