Episode Behind the Scenes

TREKCORE > TNG > EPISODES > UNIFICATION, PART I > Behind the Scenes

Tracy Tormé had originally been signed to do a second season opener called "Return to Forever" bringing the movie era Spock together with the 24th century Spock through the Guardian of Forever from classic Trek's "The City on the Edge of Forever". However, due to the Writers Guild strike, talks with Nimoy fell apart.

Paramount's president Frank Mancuso had asked Rick Berman to "somehow find a way to lock the two [series] together during Trek's silver anniversary."

Star Trek VI director Nick Meyer was brought in to discover ways to bridge references between the generations in his movie script.

The Klingon Bird of Prey bridge set used in Star Trek VI was used in the cloaked ship scenes in both parts.

Michael Piller was originally to write the teleplay for both parts, but due to the production order shift, he handed part one to Jeri Taylor.

Jeri Taylor was initially disappointed at just doing the story set up, but she soon changed her mind when she got the job of writing the novelization for the two-parter for Pocket Books.

Malachi Throne (Pardek) was two-times guest star on classic Trek (the Keeper in "The Cage" and Commodore Mendez in "The Menagerie").

Norman Large took time out from Phantom of the Opera to play Neral and later returned as a Cairn in "Violations" and a Kobherian in spinoff DS9s "Duet".
